I'm making slow progress with small gains in my fitness and I'm back to a pre-Christmas weight. The diet changes are becoming more habitual, although I have slipped occassionally back to the old ways. I have no races on the radar yet, which is a good thing as I have quite a few kilos to loose before I get near race weight.
I am still not sure what I will race this season, but I had better make my mind up soon, else all the races will be full. I still have unfinished business over the Ironman distance, but I am not sure that this is the year to finish it. So while I'm making up my mind on what to race, I figure that concentrating on a few little things to make me more efficient and ultimately faster is going to help.
1) Swim technique can always be improved, so I'm fist drilling lots, to set the front of the stroke up and concentraing on a whole body roll during the final push.
2) Improving my position on the race bike will improve efficiency, but this is tough to really quanitify without a tech crew, wind tunnel and a heap of parts to compare. Having a power meter does help measure the effect of the changes, but with all the variables of the ourside world only big difference are really noticable. My aim has always been to feel strong whilst down on the aerobars, rather than get as low and narrow as I can. I try to make my tweaks early in the year (like now)so that I have adjusted to them well before the racing begins.
3) Dropping the excess kilos is going to give my a lot of speed running. At least 1min over 10km, so I will keep tweaking and adjusting the diet. Just like training consistancy is key. Being heavier has meant greater impact on the legs, particularily the quads and it has been taking longer to recover from every run. This may turn out to be beneficial making the quads a little more resiliant, only time will tell, but it is a nice thought to keep reminding myself off as I plod along.
