Lesson from 2010

On a personal level 2010 was a very busy year, with quite a few of the top 10 most stressful things going to keep life interesting. Add to this my continuing athletic ambition and a handful of athletes relying on me to advise them to life time best performances, I had to take the art of plate spinning to a new level.

The biggest squeeze came to my own training. Being able to rack up 20hrs+ training a week was no longer possible, so it was a case of making the best use of the sessions that really made a difference and doing them when it counted. I followed a similar structure to previous years of building a solid base with easy and steady miles, then adding the intensity to get faster, before specifically preparing for Challenge Roth, which target race for the year.

Training across the year looked like this:

Oct-Dec 09 5-7hrs per week
Jan- May 8-12hrs per week
Jun-Jul 10-18hrs per week (specific Challenge Roth prep)
Aug-Oct 10hrs

The reality of the above training was 9hr30min (56min swim, 5hr11 bike, 3:18 run + transitions). Not far from my best, with the biking suffering the most. So what I the big lessons I learned:

1) Daily nutrition makes a difference, they are the extra hours of training to keep weight down and improve fat burning, so it has to be done using the daily diet.
2) With limit time it's not the miles but what is done with them that count.
3) The right training at the right time gives good results.
4) Enjoy the training and racing that you can do and not dwell on what can't be done.

So for this year I will be using the above lesson to hopefully improve on the Roth time with a similar amount of training time.
